Cane River Creole
National Historical Park
Located in Natchez, LA

Cane River Creole National Historical Park near Natchitoches, Louisiana was established to protect and preserve examples of French and Creole architecture with its multi-cultural history. The Oakland and Magnolia Plantations carry the legacy of this rural farmland and the people who helped to shape this country. The Louisiana African American Heritage Trail, cited in state information is indicative of the importance of the legacy they left behind. Walk through the park, along the Cane River, which provided community for the generations living there, while enjoying the moss covered pecan and live oak trees growing on the banks. Most African Americans in the area trace their cultural history to the Cane River farmland spanning some two hundred years. Consider a guided tour, and the plantation stores serve as a stage for musical programs, storytellers and craftspeople; also the Natchitoches Art Guild hosts painting workshops for park visitors.
