Continue up the hill and over the fi rst bridge at (193). Pass the Swyrehead trail head at (194) and after a few rolling hills and a few more bridges, you will approach the Clavel Tower at (206).
Follow the trail down the steep hill to the paved road at (207). Notice the tank traps on both sides of the road. During the Second World War these large concrete blocks also covered the road, and were placed here to prevent an invasion of German tanks. At (207) make a right turn up the road to the rest rooms at (208).
As you approach the rest rooms, begin walking towards the car park at (209). Continue walking through the car park, past the oil pump at (213), to the gate at (214). This area is controlled by the Army. The gate is open during most holidays, weekends, and summer months. If the gates are locked then you need to either take a bus or taxi to Lulworth. A little planning is recommended. Visit the pickatrail.com Web site for the current gate opening times.
After passing through the gates, follow the trail up the hill to its top at (226). You must hike between the yellow posts. The land surrounding this section of trail is controlled by the Army and is used as a Tank Firing Range. Only the trail between the yellow posts has been cleared of unexploded shells. |
