The Wartime House 9 Albert Dock
The Wartime House recreates the atmosphere of a working class family home during the Second World War.
The house was built in 1852 for the Piermaster. It was his job to make sure ships could enter and leave the dock at high tide.
Over the years several Piermasters and ther families have lived in the house. During the Second World War the dock became a restricted area and it is unlikely that it remained a family home.
The majority of families in Liverpool lived in rented terraced houses. Throughout the 1930s new tenements and flats were built to replace homes demolished in slum clearances. Nationally over four million new properties had been built since 1919.
For those who could afford to buy, semi-detached houses with plumbed-in bathrooms, electric kitchens and gardens of their own offered a new way of living.
