Montana de Oro State ParkMontana de Oro is the "Mountain of Gold", host to a wealth of natural beauty and wildlife. The size of the State Park is over 8000 acres, including seven miles of shoreline. This makes Montana de Oro one of the largest state parks in California.The State of California purchased the property from Irene McAllister in 1965, who gave the land its name. Prior to that, the property was owned by Rancher Oscar C. Fields in the 1940's, and before that by Alden B. Spooner and Alexander S. Hazard. This explains the names given to Hazard Canyon and Spooner's Cove. It was Alexander S. Hazard who planted the hundreds of eucalyptus trees. He was hoping to cash in on California's need for timber at the time, but unfortunately proved unsatisfactory for commercial use. More than five hundred years ago, the land was used by the Chumash Indians. There are numerous hiking trails in the park. Be alert for poison oak, stay on designated trails, and be advised that dogs are not permitted on any trails, beaches or undeveloped areas. Ignoring this law will result in a hefty fine. One of the most popular hikes (begins at our Interactive Trail 6) is to the top of Valencia Peak, at 1347 feet above sea level. At the top of this mountain are magnificent views of the park and the peninsula that separate the ocean from the Morro Bay estuary. Montana de Oro is a beautiful state park - enjoy!
