The Dwarf Palmetto Palmetto State Park, Texas
Also known as the Louisiana palmetto, blue palm and swamp palm, this plant is common in the river bottoms around the Gulf coast, east to Florida, and west to moist canyons of the Edwards Plateau. The fan like leaves arise in a crown from a subterranean tuberous rootstock. Small white flowers appear on separate stalks and give rise to a small, slightly fleshy fruit. It is occasionally browsed by cattle, and although rather attractive, is usually not cultivated for ornament. Because of its abundant growth in the Palmetto State Park, the State Park is named for this plant. Dwarf palmettos may occasionally develop trunks and grow to a height of 18 feet (but not in the park area). Several large land snails may be found around palmettos, primarily Mesodon thyroidus. The area around this park is also the habitat for the snail, Stenotrema leai cheatumi, which was first described from this locality.
