Red Rock Canyon State Park
Are you thinking about camping in the Mojave Desert? Have you considered Red Rock Canyon State Park?California's Red Rock Canyon State Park is the home of numerous plants including the Joshua Tree, the Cholla Cactus, and the Creosote. The Canyon is also a home of much wildlife - including the antelope ground squirrel, the jackrabbit, the coyote, the bobcat, and the great horned owl. You might find a few tracks in the sandy washes where the animals traveled to a burrow or to the shade of a bush. Fossils have even been found which indicate that the saber-toothed cats, camels, horses, and rhinoceroses lived here in early times.
There is one thing about this park that stands out - the red rock. Over 10,000 years ago, when the Sierra Glaciers were melting, huge lakes dotted what is now the Mojave Desert. And also some time ago, volcanoes erupted to the north and south of the park, and molten rock flowed for miles across the land. Layers of sand and gravel, carried by an ancient stream, were deposited in the area. Each stream and volcanic event blanketed the previous ones. And as time passed, a geological fault slowly raised the layers. Then water from rain and snow carved the cliffs that formed some of the unusual cliff side features seen today. The cliff edges are still loose and unstable - so be careful, and enjoy the view from a distance!
