Elephant Seals Pt. Piedras Blancas, California
These seals are cute, but they're also very dangerous. Females are aggressive when protecting their pups, and the bulls are unpredictable. The seals have large canine teeth and are fast over short distances. Seal excrement in the sand may transfer bacteria to cuts in bare feet, and this can lead to disease - so keep a safe distance!Elephant seals were once nearly extinct as they were hunted for their oil-rich blubber. Now they're protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and increasing in numbers. Elephant seals come ashore and form colonies for only a few months of every year. At this time they give birth, breed, and molt. During the rest of the year the colonies disperse and find food while swimming thousands of miles.
