Many birds, mammals, and other plants make their home in this special environment.The serene beauty of this meadow belies the powerful geological forces that created it. The meadow landscape appears tranquil, but life in the subalpine zone is not easy. The climate is harsh, with long, bittery cold winters and brief summers. Only the strongest of the plants and animals survive here. Yet these organisms are also very fragile. Together they spin a delicate web of life. Even the slightest change in precipitation or human use can upset this sensitive balance.
