Yosemite's Powder House-Jail
This is the second in a series on historical buildings at Yosemite National Park. Illustrated in this photograph is the "Powder House-Jail".
Black powder and dynamite used in Yosemite Valley were kept in this building during the 1890's, and it was later used as a jailhouse - and sometimes a morgue. The building had thick stone walls and six inches of sand in the ceiling for protection against fire.
According to Yosemite's information, in 1915 two young car thieves being held in the Powder House-Jail escaped by using the leg they twisted off the steel cot to scrape away the mortar. The thieves were recaptured and claimed it was so easy to escape that they waited until after breakfast to leave!
