Kintpuash, also known as Captain Jack, was a hereditary chief of the Modoc Indians who gained notoriety with the US Army during the 1872-1873 Modoc war. The Captain Jack's Stronghold Trail is a popular interpretive loop trail, divided into two sections, the Long Trail and the Short Trail; both trails guide the visitor through the rough terrain of the natural lava rock defenses used by the Modoc. This page describes the long trail. The entrance to the trail starts as a paved trail suitable for wheelchairs but continues as a dirt trail which is quite rough and rocky at places. There are picnic benches in a shaded location and pit toilets at the parking lot.
