The Gopher Snake
Some snakes have rattlers and venomous bites. This one likes to pretend it does too, but only when it's being threatened. The gopher snake will coil up, vibrate its tail, and hiss in times of danger.
Gopher snakes hunt mice, bats, birds, rabbits, ground squirrels, and of course ... gophers. They kill their prey by constriction. This makes the gopher snake a friend of the farmer - someone who can do with a few less rodents.
The gopher snake can be found on trails throughout the United States. If you love snakes as much as we do, then take a picture but please leave them in peace - it's illegal to take them out of the wild for any reason.
