Although the trail that leads to the grove is short, some exertion is necessary as the path is quite worn in places and may be slippery during rain. Once in the grove, be prepared to be overwhelmed by the natural beauty of the forest; ancient redwoods rise-high into the sky; many of the old giants lay where they have fallen while their enormous tree trunks protrude from the earth.

The Smith River runs adjacent to the trail and connects near a short spur trail with Mill Creek; at this location during the summer months it is possible to cross the river and join with the Hiouchi Trail to continue on with a much longer hike.

The Stout Grove Loop Trail has a maximum elevation of 152 ft (46 m), a minimum elevation of 133 ft (41 m), and an elevation range of 19 ft (6 m).
