The Doney Trail is a short, scenic, interpretive trail in a unique desert volcano setting. The trailhead for this short hike starts at the Doney Picnic Area, and gradually climbs a volcanic cinder cone. Panoramic views of the surrounding volcanic terrain including the San Francisco Peaks and the Painted Desert are visible from the scenic overlook located at the end of the trail.

In 1883, prospector Ben Doney settled here and mined this location for 50 years, searching for gold; the remains of one of his digs is still visible today.
