The Pumpkin Trail is a popular, long day hike within the Kendrick Mountain Wilderness area; the trail is steep and ends at the summit of Kendrick Peak. During 2000, the trail suffered major damage from a wildfire which ultimately destroyed over 14,000 acres. While much of the vegetation has now re-grown, sadly it will take decades for many of the trees to re-populate.

As the trail progresses along the steep canyon towards the summit of Kendrick Peak, the remains of an old sheep herder's cottage can be seen. The lookout station at the summit was built during the early 1900's and is manned during the summer months.

Kendrick Mountain peak is the second tallest peak amongst the San Francisco volcanic field; the views are spectacular from this high elevation. On a clear day, the north rim of the Grand Canyon can be seen as well as a bird's eye view of the volcanic landscape of cinder cones and dormant volcanoes. The San Francisco Peaks are located to the east and Bill Williams Mountain to the southwest.
