The Hungo Pavi Trail is a short trail that leads from the west wing to the eastern wing of an unexcavated and undisturbed ancient Chacoan building. This wide graveled trail takes visitors to what remains of the site; a structure with approximately 150 rooms, two Kivas and an enclosed plaza. Look closely at the cliff wall located to the east of the site; can you see a staircase carved into the rock?

Archeologists refer to sites such as Chetro Ketl and Hungo Pavi as Great Houses; many of the buildings were for public use such as pilgrimages and meetings for travelers from nearby or distant communities. The plaza was used for public ceremonies, trade and as an area to socialize.

Construction of this site is estimated to have begun sometime during the late 900's; many of the Chacoan people moved from Chaco Canyon during 1140 due to a severe drought. Archeologists believe that the Chaco Canyon area was almost completely abandoned by the year 1250. Chaco Culture National Historic Park is considered to be the most remarkable Ancient Puebloan ruins site within Southwest America; this sacred site is protected by federal laws, please do not disturb or remove the artifacts and report evidence of vandalism.

The Hungo Pavi Trail has a maximum elevation of 6,177 ft (1,883 m), a minimum elevation of 6,152 ft (1,875 m), and an elevation range of 25 ft (8 m).
