The General Grant Tree
This photograph captures only the base of the General Grant tree, a giant sequoia tree — whose age is about 1800 - 2000 years old! The tree is located in Kings Canyon National Park, California. The height of this enormous tree is about 267.4 feet (81.5 m) above its base. The circumference of its base is 107.6 feet (32.8 m), as seen in this photograph. And the maximum basal diameter of the tree is 40.3 feet (12.3 m)! Fossil records indicate that this ancient species first appeared in the western U.S. about 50 million years ago. The park includes an area of 4 square miles that was established to protect the Big Trees from the lumberman's axe. According to information in the park, the changing climatic conditions reduced the trees' range to isolated groves along the western slope of the Sierra Nevada.
