LeConte Memorial Lodge Yosemite National Park
| Joseph LeConte was a Georgia native, member of the original faculty of the University of California, and a charter member of the Sierra Club. He first visited Yosemite in 1870 and returned to the Sierra summer after summer for scientific research and spiritual renewal. His many published works on Sierra Nevada geology included a defense of naturalist John Muir's controversial theory of the glacial origin of Yosemite. He died in his beloved Yosemite Valley.
LeConte Memorial was built by the Sierra Club in 1903 to honor eminent geologist Joseph LeConte. At its original location in Curry Village, the Memorial served as the Valley's first visitor center and the northern terminus of the John Muir Trail. In 1919, the Memorial was dismantled and moved to its present site. The building was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987.
Sierra Club members have operated the Memorial through the years, presenting and promoting the conservation ethic with public programs, exhibits and a library.
The LeConte Memorial Lodge is open from May through September. Visitor hours are 10:00am to 4:00pm, Wednesday through Sunday. Visitors are invited to attend free evening programs. Please check their Program Flyers and Yosemite Today for program schedules.
