AT Map FAQ
What is the file format of the maps?
The trail maps are digital maps in the KMZ file format.
How do I download the maps?
After your payment is complete, a link is provided to download the maps. Click on the link; this will prompt your browswer to ask you if you would like to open or save the file. Select Save. The maps are provided in a single ZIP file.
Do the maps work with [whatever] app?
That's a lot of apps. You can use the maps in free apps like the Custom Maps App, or in free geobrowsers like Google Earth Pro on desktop. There are many others. We don't lock you into using a specific app, map, device, or operting system.
What are the red diamonds on the map?
Red diamonds on the maps are mile markers. The distance between two red diamonds is one mile. Red diamonds are labeled with elevation.
Can I print all of the maps?
You can print all of the maps, or parts of them. If you load the maps into Google Earth Pro on desktop, just click the print button. Include the scale and compass on the maps. By the way, if you're planning to hike a trail, you should always pack a printed map.
Do you access my smartphone?
We don't access any part of your smartphone. We provide you with digital maps and you download them to your smartphone, tablet, or PC, in file folders that you choose and manage. For additional privacy, use apps that do not collect or share your data. The developer of the Custom Maps App does not collect or share any user data.
Is there a monthly or annual fee?
No. You pay once and keep what you purchase, just like any other gear that you purchase.
The AT maps cover which states?
The AT map set includes CT, GA, MA, MD, ME, NC, NH, NJ, NY, PA, TN, VA, VT and WV.
What is the meaning of AT?
AT is an acronym for the Appalachian Trail, also known as the Appalachian National Scenic Trail.
What scale are the AT maps?
Each AT map is a custom 1:24,000 scale topographic quadrangle covering an area of approximately 49 to 56 square miles.
Why use a 1:24k scale map?
The 1:24,000 scale provides detailed information about the natural and manmade features of an area that are usually omitted from maps in the 1:50,000 to 1:100,000 scale range.
Are the AT maps topo quads?
Each AT map is a custom quadrangle that includes detailed topographic base maps at a 1:24,000 scale. Each page is centered on the trail and overlaps with the adjacent pages. In this way, one trail map can cover the detail that is found on up to four different USGS topographic maps.
Do the AT maps overlap?
The AT maps overlap where the trail enters (or exits) each map. The trail enters (or exits) each map only twice. The maps are saved and labeled in sequential order.
Where can I find elevation profiles?
Here: AT Elevation Profiles. The pickatrail.com website provides elevation profiles and metrics for each section of the trail that is depicted on every map.

It's the maps, not the apps that matter.
