The Heppe Cave trailhead is located along the road to Mammoth Crater. This short, steep, and rocky trail leads to a large lava-tube collapse. The path to the first entrance of the collapsed rock chamber brings visitors to the Heppe Ice Caves, where a pool of water can be seen during the warmer months. This pool is the largest open body of water within Lava Beds National Monument. Beyond it lies the opening to the chamber that leads to Heppe Chimney Cave, located west of the collapse. Summer temperatures can be very hot, but the caves remain cool. There are no water facilities on any of the trails, though water is available at the campgrounds. Before entering any caves within Lava Beds National Monument, visitors must obtain a free screening pass for White-Nose Syndrome, a deadly bat disease, from the Visitor Center or Fee Booth.

The Heppe Cave Trail has a maximum elevation of 5,330 ft., a minimum elevation of 5,257 ft. and an elevation range of 73 ft.
